Homemade Bone Broth for Dogs

Bone broth is incredibly popular these days. A valuable source of skin and joint repairing collagen, minerals and other nutrients; bone broth is an age-old food even recognized by father of modern medicine Hippocrates as a beneficial addition to the diet. It should come as no surprise then that bone broth made from nutrient rich grass finished marrow bones like the ones from Acabonac Pet is just as beneficial for your dog as it is for you.

Benefits Of Bone Broth for Dogs

Joint and Tendon Support

Bone broth contains glucosamine and chondroitin, which are natural compounds found in cartilage. These two compounds have been shown to reduce joint inflammation and stimulates the growth of new collagen for healthy joints. Bone broth is also rich in glycine and proline. Two amino acids shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Ease Arthritis Symptoms

If you have a senior pup with arthritis you should immediately add bone broth to their diet. For the same reasons bone broth supports joint and tendon health it has been shown to ease the symptoms of arthritis. By stimulating the growth of new cartilage as well as reducing inflammation, bone broth for dogs is a powerful tool towards improving the quality of life in senior dogs.

Support Hydration in Sick Dogs

If your dog has diarrhea or is throwing up (first take them to the vet) but then consider offering them bone broth. Keeping your pup hydrated is crucial when sick, and the increased flavor as well as nutrition offered by bone broth can be an excellent tool for keeping your dog hydrated.

Additional Liver Support for Dogs

Bone broth is rich in glycine, an amino acid critical for bile production and liver detoxification. Glycine has been shown to be effective at preventing the release of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrogenic cytokines within the liver, as well as reducing oxidative stress leading to improved liver health and function (source).

How To Make Bone Broth for Dogs

Making bone broth for dogs is incredibly easy and a great weekend activity! To do so you only need three ingredients. Apple cider vinegar, water, and marrow bones from a trusted source like Acabonac Pet. Because you will be extracting nutrients from these bones it’s important to only choose the best quality marrow bones: free from pesticides, herbicides, subtherapeutic antibiotics or artificial hormones. At Acabonac Farms we raise our cattle the way nature intended: eating only grass on stress-free pastures without additional chemicals.

2-3 lbs grass finished marrow bones
2 tbl apple cider vinegar

Place bones and apple cider vinegar into a large slow cooker, cover bones with two inches of water. The vinegar is necessary to extract essential minerals from the marrow bones. Set slow cooker to low and cook for 24 hours. Once 24 hours have passed, allow broth to cool and strain to remove any solids. Discard cooked bones never feed cooked bones to your dog.

You can feed your dog a couple tablespoons of bone broth a day to give them a nutritional boost. It can be added to their water to increase their water uptake, added to their food to increase their appetite, or served alone as a treat. Leftover bone broth can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days or frozen for longer storage. A great tip for pre-portioned broth is to freeze it in ice cube trays for perfectly portioned cubes of dog friendly bone broth!
